We are so rushed and our attention is bombarded it seems by so many things, from kids activities, social media, and so many ways to be entertained and manipulated by our electronic devices.
It’s no wonder we are stressed! It seems like there is no time to take care of ourselves and just get a break and some “me” time. And then there is stress from relationships, to work, to finances, to our health.
It can be a vicious cycle.
Here is a scenario you may be familiar with:
You feel stressed from lack of sleep, from a feeling of being overwhelmed by responsibilities at work, family duties, financial worries, so you turn to scrolling social media, watching TV, while you munch on unhealthy foods. This leads to feeling bad about yourself, and you continue the cycle due to exhaustion, by oversleeping and choosing to skip exercise, don’t plan healthy meals. It can make you feel a little crazy!
The chronic stress you feel impacts your decision making and your habits.
Here are some tips to deal with stress that won’t cost you.
- First, reframe the stress you are feeling from a negative thought to a positive one. Instead of saying “I have no time to cook” “no energy or motivation to work out”, set a goal to go out for a walk for 10 minutes 3 times this week.
- Second, be mindful. You don’t even need to be sitting or in a quiet space. Just get present to the moment without judgment, and stay in the moment for 30 seconds or a minute while washing the dishes, or in the shower.
- Finally, take a moment to just sit and focus on your breath. If you only have a minute, do it for a minute.
- Journaling has also been found to be very effective in reducing stress levels.
